Ypsilanti Event:  An evening with Guy McPherson - Saturday night 2/18

come join us in a comfortable setting ~   Where: The Gilbert Residence 203 South Huron Street, Ypsilanti, MI;  6 pm

Little Artshram and the Continual University Series, along with several other Michigan communities and organizations has invited Professor Emeritus Guy McPherson, of the Dept. of Natural resources and the Environment at the University of Arizona to deliver presentations and talks in Michigan. His scholarly work, focused primarily on conservation of biological diversity, has produced 10 books and more than 100 articles. After researching environmental degradation, climate change, and fossil fuel dependency, he discovered that traditional conceptualizations of sustainability are woefully inadequate.

Dr. McPherson left his tenured faculty position after recognizing the extremely untenable, unsustainable pathway we are on is dangerously close to collapse. He now lives in a straw bale house, and is increasing his self sufficiency through organic farming and community resilience. He advises individuals, groups, and communities on how to increase their resilience in the face of economic depression, increasing energy prices, and climate change.   See a brief video clip about Guy:

‎"Carbon-Sequestering Agriculture"
Climate change is already making our planet less inhabitable, with droughts, floods, and severe weather events on the rise. Stabilizing the climate is perhaps the central challenge for humanity in the early decades of this century. Globally, a massive switch to regenerative practices, perennial crops, and regional self-reliance are essential to sequester carbon and reduce emissions. The organic farming and gardening community is already on the forefront of these efforts, but much more is required.
..Regenerative agriculture is a multipurpose strategy, addressing soil building, regional self-reliance and food sovereignty, perennial farming systems development, climate justice, and productive conservation. As farmers, gardeners, food system organizers, and citizens, it is time for us to reorganize agriculture to address the climate crisis."

Tree Crops & Agroforestry

Stabilizing the Global Climate with Perennial Farming Practices

Reforestation is a critical strategy to sequester carbon. Climate change science tells us that we cannot sacrifice agricultural land to plant carbon-capturing trees. But perennial farming practices can offer us the best of both worlds, including agroforestry, coppice, rotational grazing, and remarkable staple crops that literally grow on trees.

Carbon-friendly farming potential
This unit of the Carbon Farming Course will review the carbon-sequestering capacity of various perennial farming systems. While tons/hectare/year of carbon sequestered varies by climate, soil type, crop, and production system, the numbers are extremely promising and could represent an essential element of a global effort to stabilize climate. Perennial farming systems are also more resilient to chaotic weather events than annual systems.

An Introduction to Permaculture

I began reading Bill Mollison's An Introduction to Permaculture about 2 weeks ago and it has been changing my life since. I live on a very small piece of property in a very crowded suburb, but I have already changed the design of my little piece of Earth to conform to the ideas in this book.

My next endeavor is Permaculture One which I received in the mail just yesterday. After that I will be looking to obtain Permaculture: a Designer's…

Chiwara Permaculture

Chiwara Permaculture Weekend Intensive

Friday, August 12, 2011, 6pm - Sunday, August 14, 2011, 6pm
Community Systems Learning Center
5451 Austin Road
Camden, MI

Our first intensive was an unforgettable weekend with wonderful new friends! Don't miss this one!

This powerful weekend is for those that are ready to jump head first into hands on Permaculture design. Take home life changing skills in self sufficiency, renewable energy, organic agriculture, primitive skills, whole systems composting, fermentation and nature awareness.

Head Instructor:

Nathan Ayers - Director, Chiwara Permaculture

Join Permaculture educator Nathan Ayers on this journey through the principles, ethics, and applications of Permaculture Design. Nathan has been teaching students and leaders across Michigan on how to make the transition away from fossil fuels, and towards self sufficiency. This transition is all about becoming producers rather than consumers, and reintegrating humanity with Nature. Nathan's curriculum is based on taking responsibility for yourself and your family, in the areas of food, energy, water, building, transporation and waste. Students leave his courses with the tools needed to inititate personal transformation, self sufficiency and community resilience.

Featured Guest Instructors:

Craig Toepfer - Author of "The Hybrid Electric Home"
www.hybridelectrichome.com

Craig is a legend in the American Wind industry, designing wind energy systems since the 1970s. He designed and installed the hybrid wind and solar energy system at CSLC, and will teach you the basics of renewable energy and their practical applications for both the city and country.

David Klingenberger - Owner of "The Brinery"
www.thebrinery.com

David will be leading a workshop on the ancient art of fermentation, and how food preservation applies to permanent culture. Its safe to say that David and the brinery are larger than life. He has the skills (and kim chi) to back it up, and his workshop will most definately "stimulate your inner economy".

Justin Pawloske - Owner of "Your Recycling Aid"

Compost Everything! Even yourself!!

Justin is is a composting fanatic and expert. He brings his love of trees, plants, and animals into every course he teaches, and his passion for turning "waste" into treasure comes through in all he does. You'll see why there is no such thing as "trash" in nature, and how composting and recycling energy are critical to permaculture design.

Michael Wilson - Perennial based, rotational grazing farmer and permaculturist

Mike has been an organic farmer since before it was hip. He decided to switch to perennial based rotational grazing when the "tractor broke" 20 years ago. Thanks to Joel Salatin, this method of farming has all the perma people talking, and you will get the benefit of Mike's leadership & expertise in this field.

Jason Hogans - Primitive skills and nature awareness expert

Jason is an animal. Really. This is who you want with you if things ever get "hairy" out there. Learn from someone that knows not just about wild edibles, but how to build a civilzation from scratch, starting with the dirt under your feet. What should you do if you're stranded in the woods? Spend 2 hours with Jason and get a head start.

Early Bird Registration Price is $185.62
Includes camping and gourmet local meals.

($175 + 10.62 eventbrite fee. Vegetarian options at each meal.)
